Founded in 1965, Craven Community College is a comprehensive community college with campuses in New Bern and Havelock-Cherry Point. Craven serves more than 3,200 curriculum students and nearly 10,000 continuing education students each year. CCC features a wide range of programs, including college transfer courses, career and occupational offerings, partnerships with four-year universities, specialized workforce training options, developmental studies and basic skills classes. The College offers associate’s degrees, diplomas and certificates in many areas. These programs can get you started on a great career or can put you on your way to earning a bachelor’s degree! The College features an FAA-certified Aviation Systems Technology program as well as a number of health care offerings, including Nursing, Medical Assisting and Health Information Technology. Through University Connections, Craven’s partnerships with East Carolina University, North Carolina State University and Southern Illinois University, CCC graduates have the opportunity to pursue bachelor’s degrees without ever leaving the area. The College is growing to meet the needs of its community. In 2008, the College opened a new 35,000-square-foot building at the New Bern Campus to accommodate Craven’s array of business and computer information technology programs. The same year, Craven dedicated the new Bosch Advanced Manufacturing Center on the New Bern Campus, which provides state-of-the-art training in manufacturing methods and processes to support BSH Home Appliances Corp. and other industrial employers. The Havelock-Cherry Point Campus is home to the Institute of Aeronautical Technology, which provides training in aircraft maintenance to support the Fleet Readiness Center East at nearby MCAS Cherry Point. The Campus also is home to the Lewis S. Redd Classroom Building as well as a branch of the Craven County Public Library. Craven Early College high school and the Public Radio East network are located at the New Bern Campus. Craven Early College EAST (Eastern Applied Sciences and Technology) is located on the Havelock-Cherry Point campus. A Small Business Center, a strong adult enrichment program and arts and entertainment events help round out the College’s offerings to Craven County and the growing region. About Public Radio East : Public Radio East is a nonprofit, non-commercial broadcasting organization, licensed to the Board of Trustees of Craven Community College in New Bern, North Carolina. Originally established in 1984 as WTEB-89.3FM, Public Radio East now broadcasts 24 hours a day on five frequencies, divided into two complete program networks. Broadcast studios are located in Barker Hall on the campus of Craven Community College. Public Radio East is a regional broadcast network that enriches people's lives in Eastern North Carolina. It is one of only six 100,000-watt public radio stations in the United States licensed to a community college. The station serves as the primary public radio outlet for 17 counties of Eastern Central North Carolina. From north to south, PRE serves the cities and surrounding communities of Washington, Greenville, New Bern, and Jacksonville, and from east to west Beaufort, Morehead City, Kinston and Goldsboro. The station is recognized as a full-service professional public radio station by the Corporation for Public Broadcasting and is a member of both National Public Radio and Public Radio International. In 1985, WTEB had approximately nine thousand weekly listeners. Today, over fifty thousand people listen to Public Radio East each week. Public Radio East is a National Public Radio (NPR) affiliate. NPR produces award-winning programs, such as Morning Edition, Weekend Edition, All Things Considered, Car Talk, and others. PRE also provides Public Radio International programming, such as BBC (British Broadcasting Company) World News. Public Radio East is Eastern North Carolina's primary source for classical, jazz, and Americana music. On January 31, 2003 Public radio listeners in Eastern North Carolina were offered more programming choices when Public Radio East launched The News and Ideas Network on four of its five frequencies. The weekend format on the new service includes a combination of old favorites such as Weekend Edition, Car Talk, This American Life and American Routes , as well as programs such as Wait, Wait, Don't Tell Me, which featured, until his retirement in 2014, Goldsboro native and longtime NPR newsman Carl Kasell. Public Radio East's News Department has received numerous awards, including the Associated Press award for Outstanding News Operation in North Carolina in 2004 and 2005. In 2006 PRE was, again, recognized by AP with seven awards including: Best General News; Best Sports Programming; Best Consumer Reporting; Best Health Report; and Best Series. In 2011 PRE received 7 Associated Press Awards, sweeping its division. In 2009 PRE received The Pelican Award for Community Action from the NC Coastal Federation. PRE staff and volunteers were recognized for their efforts to build an oyster reef and wetlands in the White Oak River in Swansboro, NC.
